Clever music videos: All Time Low’s “I Feel Like Dancin'”
Any time a band grows large enough and begins appealing to more than just the particular scene they represent, the “sellout” schtick comes up unfailingly. Vehement old-All Time Low fans are some of the most ruthless out there, decrying everything after 2007’s So Wrong, It’s Right as an utter pile of garbage.
When 2011’s Dirty Work came out, the haters were in full force, and especially denounced I Feel Like Dancin’ as a total major-label sellout.
Amusingly, the music video for that debut single is a tongue-in-cheek middle finger to much of the controversy surrounding their supposed “selling out.”
The band doesn’t bother sugar-coating anything: The video features sardonic product placement, sex and theft of other mainstream musicians’ ideas as a blatant way of saying “we’re not actually selling out.” It’s hardly a well-veiled artistic masterpiece, but coming from All Time Low, you can expect them to be pretty forthcoming. As a result, the self-deprecation of themselves and mockery of the mainstream music industry is a lighthearted way of telling off the critics without being scathing.
